II. One thing the Bible teaches:

1 Then Job answered and said: 2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.

III. Reflection

* QuestionsWhat is consolation? Must it involve words? Could it involve empty words? Could it involve no word at all?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God,

I thank You for showing me that words of consolation can sometimes turn out to be empty (v. 34) or even crushing and tormenting to those who hear them (19:2). I thank You for teaching me that simply being present and listening to someone who needs comfort is already a valuable and biblical act. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for bringing me to this realization and reminding me of Your teaching that You have given us ears to hear and listen to others (Matthew 11:15).

O Lord, please help me to be intentional in listening to someone today, beginning with my loved ones at home. Train me to listen more attentively, for there are many people in this busy world who long to be heard. Help me to understand this truth and to respond with compassion and care. Today.

Amen.
