II. One thing the Bible teaches: (upon returning home from captivity in Babylon...)

When the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God...

Now in the second year after their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem... 11 ... And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhen did the returnees start the rebuilding of the temple of the Lord?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that the reconstruction of the templebeginning with the foundationdid not start right away when Your people returned to the homeland. In fact, it did not get started until the second month of the second year. I thank You for showing me what has got to be the priority number one of Your people was the building of the altar to worship You. They knew that when their hearts were right and refreshed in worshiping You, they could tackle any other difficulties down the road associated with the long-term reconstruction of Your temple. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me of Your teachingthe first thing first principle in life (Matthew 6:33). O Lord! Please help me to seek You first today. Please help me to seek to be right in Your presence first. Anything else after that, I believe, will be possible with Your help. Amen
