II. One thing the Bible teaches:

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright. Though Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph).

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat is the significance of the birthright of the firstborn son?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that one's birthright of being a firstborn son in a family is more of a privilege than a right, as one cannot choose when to be born first. Being a privilege, it offers the first position to the throne and also responsibilities. It can be given, taken away, exchanged, or sold. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for bringing me to this point to remind me of Your teaching about the first being last and the last being first (Matthew 19:30). O Lord Jesus! Please help me to treasure the privilege of being Your firstborn as a follower of Yours (Romans 8:29) in my living today. Please help me not to blindly and ignorantly sell it off, or exchange it, for any temporary gain. Please remind me that the first to be last is very real and that You have already warned about this. Amen
