The Enumerated and the Limitless...

I. Click here to READ 1 Chr 21 first.

II. One thing the Bible teaches:

Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number...”

But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel. And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat was in the number that caused God to be displeased and David to sin greatly?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for reminding me that a number is a tool of measurement. Knowing a number is knowing the smallness or the bigness or the capacity holding capacity of something. A small number of the population could be a cause for concern. A large number of the population could be a cause of arrogance. I thank You for letting me know that, regardless of the number of the population, big or small, my knowing the number will always give me problems. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that there are things You do not want certain people to know (Matthew 11:25) and for gracious reasons. O Lord! Today, let me trust in Your capacity, which cannot be enumerated. Let me forgo the finding of, and depending on, my ability, which is limited. Amen
