II. One thing the Bible teaches: (after David was made king over all Israel...)

Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.” Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). Now David had said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David. He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat can we learn from David in this passage?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for the many lessons from king David in this passage. Lessons can be derived from his facing the impossibility, his handling of human resources, and his letting his presence be used to reinforce the stronghold, to have it called the City of David. Most of all, I thank You for the lesson from David, not in what he did, but in what he let be done to him — he was willing to let the Lord of hosts be with him (v9). He knew that was the key for him to become greater and greater. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me of the significance of Your name, Immanuel, when You came into the world (Matthew 1:23). Christmas has come and gone, but Immanuel doesn't have to be a once-a-year reminder. Today, and every day, may the God-with-us be with my world, with my nation, with my community, with my worship in Your church, with my family, and with me myself. Amen

O Lord Jesus. I pray for certain readers today who are yet to have You with them. I pray for their wanting to have Your presence in their life today. May they experience the overflowing of blessings from above today. Amen
