II. One thing the Bible teaches: (Before there was any king in Israel, there was an Edomite king Bela...then...)

44 Bela died, and Jobab ... reigned... 45 Jobab died, and Husham... reigned...  46 Husham died, and Hadad... reigned... 47 Hadad died, and Samlah... reigned... 48 Samlah died, and Shaul... reigned... 49 Shaul died, and Baal-hanan... reigned... 50 Baal-hanan died, and Hadad reigned... 51 And Hadad died.

III. Reflection

QuestionsHow is it that there are no surprises in the above verses about the kings of Edom?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that there is no exception to the royal cycle: kings reigned and then kings died. And death is always there to break any cycle, as was the case for the Edomites (vv. 44-51). I thank You, Lord Jesus, for bringing me to this point to remind me that Your truly divine royal cycle is not like any other cycle; it will not be broken for that reason — You shall reign forever and ever (Rev 11:15). O Lord! I thank You that You reign forever, providing the assurance that Your promises will be honored and fulfilled. One of those promises is that whoever believes in You will have everlasting life. O Lord! I believe that You are God, that You became man, that You gave Yourself to die to save me, that You rose from the dead to prove that those who believe in You will also have victory over death angel as You did. Today, I pray that I will live in accordance with my beliefs—with joy, with peace, and with gratitude. Amen
