II. One thing the Bible teaches: (having done so many evil things during his reign, king Ahab was about to face severe punishment by a message from the Lord through Elijah...)
27 It came about when Ahab heard these words, that he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about despondently. 28 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but I will bring the evil upon his house in his son’s days.”
III. Reflection
* Questions: Was it humility that moved God to change his plan, or was it Ahab's genuine repentance?
IV. Application
Dear Lord God: I thank You for letting me see that it was humility that caused Your changing of the plan to punish Ahab and his family. But it was driven by his genuine repentance that pleased You. Both of these--humility and repentance--are inseparable. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me of Your teaching about true repentance--the one that yields fruit (Matthew 3:8). O Holy Spirit! Since repentance pleases You, please convict me to truly repent my sins, starting with those of today. Amen
