Shockingly surprised...

II. One thing the Bible teaches: (After gaining strength from the heavenly-supplied food in the wilderness, Elijah...)
8 ... arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
III. Reflection
* Questions: Was it shocking and surprising for Elijah to hear the Lord asking him the above question? Why?
IV. Application
Dear Lord God: I thank You for letting me hear Your question to Elijah after he spent his effort to go forty days and forty nights to reach the mountain of God--the mountain of Yours. He must be shockingly surprised at Your question! He must, because he did not hear the expected welcome and acknowledgment of his achievement as the sole surviving prophet. Neither did he hear the compliment of the heroic effort he spent going 40 straight days and nights to get here to his God's mountain. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that on that day, many people will be very surprised after having worked so hard--supposedly in Your name--to hear from the Lord, "I never knew you." (Matthew 7:21-23) O Lord! Please help me to know that there is a potential for this to happen to me. Please help me to be careful to do Your Word, not just to hear Your Word. Amen
