II. One thing the Bible teaches:

15 Now when the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David went down and his servants with him; and as they fought against the Philistines, David became weary. 16 Then Ishbi-benob, who was among the descendants of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of bronze in weight, was girded with a new sword, and he intended to kill David. 17 But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, helped him and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall not go out again with us to battle, so that you do not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat could be worse than telling a man of war to not see battlefield actions anymore?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for reminding me that You Yourself recognized David as a man of war (1 Chron. 28:3), as he was no doubt a talented fighter and winner. But at this battle with the Philistines in the above passage, he almost lost his life. His men lovingly, but firmly, told him to retire from the battlefield. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that You created man to have limits. When hungry, we are to eat, and when tired, we are to rest (John 4:6). O Holy Spirit! Today, please help me realize the limits that You have for me in life, physically, mentally, or spiritually. Please guide me to accept them and deal with them appropriately and graciously. Amen
