Spread the good news, not the religion...

II. One thing the Bible teaches: (The battle has ended with the death of David's son Absalom. News carriers were sent to bring news from the front line to the anxiously waiting king David...)

25 The watchman called and told the king. And the king said, “If he is by himself there is good news in his mouth.” And he came nearer and nearer. 26 Then the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, another man running by himself.” And the king said, “This one also is bringing good news.”

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat does it mean by good news in this passage that David kept mentioning and hoping for?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for letting me see here that good news means different things for different people. To the couriers, good news meant that liberation had come to the king and his people because Absalom had been killed. To David, good news meant his generals had respected his will and had spared Absalom's life. It turned out that the young man was dead; the expected good news never came, and David's nightmare became too overwhelming for him. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that good news means Your birth--God became man (Luke 2:10-11). Good news means Your death--it is finished! Everything has been fully paid! (John 19:30). Good news also means Your resurrection--death no more (John 20:17). O Lord! Today, may I bring this good news to others around me. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for coming for me, for dying on my behalf, and for resurrecting for my eternity. I thank You for forgiving my sins and for granting me the abundant life--here and beyond. Today, please make me mindful of spreading the good news, not the religion. Amen

Today, I pray for certain readers who haven't accepted the good news because they are not ready to accept an organized religion. O God. Please lead them to the realization of the true meaning of the good news to receive You as the Savior for his or her own life--accepting the good news rather than the religion. Amen
