II. One thing the Bible teaches: (as the drought deepened, the prophet Elijah came to a town called Zarephath. There he asked a widow for a little water in a jar and a piece of bread...)
12 But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
III. Reflection
* Questions: What's the point of eating if a person knows that after the meal, he or she will die?
IV. Application
Dear Lord God, I thank you for showing me that the situation in Zarephath was very desperate and real. The meal on that day was intended to be the last meal for the widow and her son. But with Your intervention through the prophet Elijah, it did not turn out to be the last meal. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that You also had Your last meal with Your disciples (Luke 22:16). And that meal did, indeed, turn out to be the last one. Without the intervention of God the Father on the cross, You died! And, because of that, we live. O Lord! Your intervention is key, not the resources. Sometimes You intervene--even to the lowest, and sometimes You do not--even to the beloved. Your will is the best, and may Your will be done. May I joyfully trust in Your will. Amen
