II. One thing the Bible teaches (Samuel warned the Israelites about the negative aspects of having a king over them...)

19 Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, “No, but there shall be a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” 21 Now after Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the Lord’s hearing. 22 The Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice and appoint them a king.”

III. Reflection

QuestionsWhat does Jehovah Nissi mean?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God: I thank You for reminding me that throughout the long history of the Israelites, You were always their Judge. You always went out in front of them in battles. And You always fought their enemies for them. You were always the Jehovah Nissi to them. It must have saddened You so much, Lord, when the very people whom You did these things for now turned around and asked for a king, just any king to be like other peoples--a king to do the things that You had been doing for them. Dear Lord Jesus, I thank You for taking me to this point to remind me that You are the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev 19:16). O Lord! Please remind me to never replace You with anyone, or anything, as the world is trying to overwhelm me with its many invitations. Amen
