Mention not their gods' name...

I. Click here to READ Joshua 23 first.

II. One thing the Bible teaches (as one of the last instructions to his people, Joshua told them to be firmly obedient to the Lord's teachings...)

so that you will not associate with these nations, these which remain among you, or mention the name of their gods, or make anyone swear by them, or serve them, or bow down to them. But you are to cling to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.

III. Reflection

QuestionsAccording to the Scripture above, how many things are God's people not to do regarding the people of the world? Which one is most likely to be violated?

IV. Application

Dear Lord God, I thank You for reminding me of the one prohibition that is often easily violated. And that is the mentioning of other people's gods' names. I must not do that regardless of any reason. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me of Your teaching that the mouth speaks from what fills the heart (Luke 6:45). O Lord! Today, please help me to remember that even when I testify about You to someone, I do not have to mention that person's god's name. I can just cling to You. There is so much about You to talk, Lord. Please help me to focus on You and what You have done. Amen
