II. One thing the Bible teaches (done with the fighting alongside their brothers, the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left for home on the Eastside of the Jordan river. On their way home...)
11 And the sons of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan . . ." 26 “Therefore We [the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh] said, ‘Let us build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice . . . " 34 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar Witness.
III. Reflection
* Questions: What was the one word that may have caused a civil war among the Israelites at the very beginning of their life in the promised land?
IV. Application
Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that the one word that could have triggered a fierce fighting between the Israelites was "altar." It was because of the greatest respect for it in their reverence for You. There shall only be one altar for the one Jehovah God. An explanation for the second one that was erected by the three tribes on the Eastside of the Jordan was well listened to and accepted by the Westside Israelites. I thank You for showing me the one word that the Eastside tribes were willing to change to establish peace and unity. And that was "Witness" as they called what they erected earlier. I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that You Yourself did make the change for unity with the Father and for the salvation of humanity (Luke 22:42). Help me today, Lord Jesus, to be willing to change for the sake of peace and unity at home and at church. Amen
