A Caretaker and an Owner...
I. Click here to READ Deuteronomy 17 first.
II. One thing the Bible teaches: (One of the expectations for the future kings of Israel is the daily reading of God's Word...)
19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, 20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers... (ESV)
* Questions: Who cannot be higher than the citizens in a nation? Does it make sense? How can this be achieved?
IV. Application:
Dear Lord God: Although it is hard to understand why a king of Israel is not to be above his Israelite citizens, You show me that it is not hard to see why a caretaker is not the owner of what he is to look after. O Lord! Only You are the owner of Your people (Deu 10:14). Thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that You do see the proud and that You do not like the self-elevation (Matthew 23:12). May the leaders whom You have placed in a position to care for Your people--young or old, small or big, one or many--never act as if they own or are above Your children. May I remember that there is a close connection between faithful reading of Your Word and treating Your people rightly. Please help me do that today. Amen
