The transparency of the Bible...
I. Click here to READ Numbers 25 first.
II. One thing the Bible teaches:
1 While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab. 2 For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry against Israel. 4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor.” . . . 9 Those who died by the plague were 24,000.
III. Reflection
* Questions: Who are being referred to as the people in the above passage (the Israelites or the Moabites)? How was the punishment for the sexual sin carried out? Publicly or secretly?
IV. Application:
Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that it was the Israelites--the chosen, the set-aside, holy people--who committed the most serious sin. However, You hid nothing; You attempted no cover-up. You publicly had 24,000 people killed. And You wrote it in the everlasting book. Indeed, I can see clearly that You never leave the guilty unpunished (Exodus 34:7). I thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this point to remind me that everyone sins--being a child of God is no exception. Consequently, everyone deserves his or her own punishment. Praise the Lord! However, You took the punishment for us (Romans 3:23-25). Help me, Holy Spirit, today to humbly live out the life that has been saved from the wrath of the Holy God by believing in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace, it has been. Amen
Today, I pray that those who study and examine the Bible will admire and respect Your transparency. And Your Holiness. Amen
