 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.

III. Reflection

* Questions: Previously, Jacob insisted in calling the place Luz by the name Bethel (Gen 28:19). Now Israel was near death and he called that place Luz. Is there any significance in his changing how he called the place?

IV. Application:

Dear Lord God: Thank You for letting me know that, to Jacob, Luz and Bethel were two names of the same place at two different times. The time when he was Jacob and the time when he was then Israel. The time when he was young and full of energy and the time when he was then near death and depleted of energy. What mattered most for him was, regardless how it was called, it was the place where he was blessed by the Almighty... so that he can now bless the future generations. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking me to this place to remind me that You emphasize substance and the spirit of worship more than the name or the place of worship (John 4:21). Please teach me today to set aside the differences in calling someone or something that tend to separate my brothers and sisters. Please teach me to pay attention to the common substance to pull my brothers and sisters together to honor You and worship You. Amen

I pray for certain readers who do not know what appropriate name to call You to worship You. I pray that such readers will start worshiping You right in the place where they are by calling You as You had instructed: "Our Father in heaven." Amen
