Not given casually but offered reverently...

I. Click here to READ first Genesis 4.

II. One thing the Bible teaches: (Adam and Eve had two sons. Cain worked as a farmer and Abel a shepherd...)

In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”

III. Reflection

Questions: Why was Cain's offering not accepted? Why was God pleased with Abel's?

IV. Application:

Dear Lord God: I thank You for letting me know one aspect of the offerings from Cain and Abel. Your accepting the offering had more to do with the attitude and manner of the offering action than with what was being offered to You (v7). O God! Please remind me of this next time when I offer something to You (my time, my service, my talent, or my money). It ought not to be given casually, but offered reverently. It ought not to be based on "my" possession, but Yours. All Yours! Amen
