Just because of bread and butter...

II. One thing the Bible teaches:
29 When Jacob had cooked a stew one day, Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted; 30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a mouthful of that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was called Edom by name. 31 But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” 32 Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “First swear to me”; so he swore an oath to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.
III. Reflection
* Questions: What does "nearsightedness" mean? What is the birthright?
IV. Application:
Dear Lord God: Thank You for reminding me that nearsightedness is a vision condition that allows one to see things nearby but not at a distance. When selling his birthright of a first-born son, Esau sold away the rights and responsibilities that the then-society bestowed on the first-born son of the family. I thank You for showing me that although I criticized Esau for despising his right to be the firstborn because of a shortsighted solution--food. I, too, may be doing the very same thing. Please help me not to despise the right to become a child of God (John 1:12) on account of similar short-lived bread-and-butter offerings of the world today. May I act as a child of God would. Amen
