Don't just look away mercilessly...

I. Click here to READ first Genesis 18.

II. One thing the Bible teaches: (The Lord told Abraham about the imminent destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their grave sin. Abraham interceded fervently for the cities asking the Lord to change His punishment criterion. Abraham said to the  Lord...)

24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?... 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?”... 30 ... Suppose thirty are found there?...” 31 ... Suppose twenty are found there?...” 32 ... Suppose ten are found there?”

III. Reflection

Questions: How do we know Abraham interceded fervently for the cities?

IV. Application:

Dear Lord God: I thank You for showing me that Abraham, indeed, felt for the cities and the people living in them. He interceded fervently as demonstrated by the number of "bargaining-like" prayers he kept coming back to the Lord. He asked the Lord to lower His punishment criterion--from 50 down to 10 righteous people--if found to be living there--to forgive the cities. I thank You for taking me to this point to remind me that although Abraham's intercession for the cities failed, he did try his best sincerely to "mourn" (Matt 5:4) for the cities. Such people will be blessed by the Lord.

O Lord! I thank You for showing me that I mourn for me and mine a lot but I am insensitive to the wickedness and spiritual ruin of my community, city, and society. Please forgive me, O Lord, and revive in me the ability to mourn for others sincerely. To pray for them. Amen
